In other news:
Your humble beermaidens recently threw our very own Bacchanalia in celebration of the birth of Miss Riot. While we may have opted out of the traditional midnight-mountaintop celebrations (after all, September is a bit chilly for running about the woods at night outfitted with naught but fawnskins, vine leaves, and thyrsuses), we did nevertheless settle for a more laid-back, local grove known as the P.O.P.E. Bar (a.k.a. Pub on Passyunk East).
Thus it was we found ourselves in a pleasant hole-in-the-wall, decked intriguingly in iron chains, a ceiling cannon, and quite the impressive bar menu. Not only that, but we managed to pick up a few guest-reviewers, chicks (almost) as hot as ourselves.
We hope you enjoy this account of our expensive beer-foray of the evening. And we apologize in advance for the briefness of Miss Riot’s post. As we mentioned, it was her birthday. She was drunk. ‘Nuff said.

Kunoichi Erica: The first thing I noticed as I carried several glasses of this beer to our already cluttered table was that the color was an almost exact match to my nail polish: a deep, autumn sunset baked golden-brown by the waning light. Overall impression: harvestride. With the smell of a candy apple, and a tangy, pumpkin-pie backwash, it was an interesting change for the night. Althought it was a little too sweet for my taste, I can’t deny that for those of you with a bit of a sweettooth, the Kaiser is a perfect choice as the Halloween season rolls in.

As to our first guest-writer of the evening:
HopDevil: Love the beautiful deep-orange color. Very sweet, much like the feel of a Dubbel, with a definite pumpkin flavor. Not as spicy as I would imagine an Oktoberfest to be, as the sweet taste eventually overpowers any spice that I tasted in the first sip. Nevertheless, deliciously smooth. Mmm…squash.

Philly Lush: While the aristocrats are drinking Oktoberfest, I have opted for good, old-fashioned PBR. This smooth beer is often ignored by the beer afficionados, as it is the cheap beer preferred by college students and starving artists. I say, damn the Man! (Save the Empire). PBR can be apprecieated for its taste. I may have lied when I called it smooth earlier–I think you have to grow into it–but it’s certainly the better of the “cheap” beers. It’s not too weak, not too heavy, and not as disgusting as a Country Club or a Beast (officially known as Milwaukee’s Best). In short, PBR is the drink of champions. Sure, it’s no one’s first choice, but if you’re on a limited budget it is the recommended alternative. Also, the merchandise is cool.
